Abstract:
The 1:20 000 scale Topographic Base Map series are digital map layers that show lakes, rivers, streams, marshes, contours, and elevations of surrounding land. Additional features such as classified roads, railway lines, towns, villages and buildings are also shown. This data was collected photogrammetrically from 1:60 000 aerial photography.
Purpose:
To provide the public with high detail and high accuracy topographic base map coverage of Manitoba.

The coordinates of the points are from DXF files exported from Computer Aided Resource Information System (CARIS). Utilities were selected based on the dxf-layer attribute in the DXF files.

Placed control survey targets around the perimeter of proposed aerial photography blocks (2 -3 cm on a two-dimensional block, 3 - 4 cm on the third dimension).

Acquired aerial photography (1:5000 to 1:60 000 scale).

Performed aerotriangulation of photography, geo-referencing all photogrammetric controls to true ground coordinates.

Collected vector digital data using analogue plotters (Wild A10 - A8 - B8S). Vector data were three dimensional (x,y,z) and geo-referenced to UTM coordinates. The output format was DXF.

Performed cursory checks of digital data (removal of pseudo nodes, creation of polygons, etc.).

Process_Description:
Imported raw DXF files into ArcInfo format via the DXFARC command. Each DXF file contained topographic base map data for one 1:50 000 mapsheet.

Built lines and points then copied attribute information from the ACODE and XCODE tables into the arc and point attribute tables (AAT and PAT). Dropped five attribute fields from the resulting attribute tables.

Selected points representing utilities based on the dxf-layer attribute. Put the points for each utility category to respective ArcInfo coverages.

Built utility points then joined all utility layers into one coverage.

Appended mapsheet utility point coverages into a Manitoba-wide coverage and built final coverage.
